My Approach in Action:
Feeling stuck in a relationship can be deeply distressing, especially when divorce feels like the only option. I specialize in Discernment Counseling to help couples find clarity. For example, I worked with a pair who felt they had reached a point of no return. Instead of immediately trying to “fix” things, we paused to explore all three paths: ending the relationship, committing to change, or staying the course. This structured, short-term process lowered the emotional intensity and allowed them to make a thoughtful, confident decision about their future, free from pressure or regret.
A Personal Note From Debra:
In moments of high stress or conflict, our emotions can take over, leaving us feeling reactive and out of control. I am committed to helping you find a sense of calm and centeredness, even when life feels chaotic. Using mindfulness techniques, we can work together to create a space between a trigger and your reaction. This empowers you to respond to challenges with intention and clarity rather than impulse. My goal is to provide a supportive, non-judgmental environment where you can navigate difficult transitions and build a more peaceful, mindful way of living.

More about Debra…
Debra Feinberg, LCSW, is an experienced clinical social worker licensed in New Jersey and New York, with over 25 years of experience helping couples, adults, adolescents, and families navigate relationship challenges, personal struggles, and family concerns. She is the founder and director of Maplewood Counseling, where she provides virtual marriage, couples, and individual therapy, as well as consultations. For those seeking in-person sessions, Debra invites you to explore the services offered by other clinicians at Maplewood Counseling here.
Debra graduated from Binghamton University in 1980 and earned her Master of Social Work degree from Syracuse University in 1996. Her extensive training and eclectic approach to therapy allow her to tailor her methods to meet the unique needs of each client. She draws from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), Mindfulness, and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Additionally, she incorporates insights from The Gottman Method, Esther Perel’s work, and Terry Real’s Relational Life Therapy to help clients build stronger, more fulfilling relationships.
Debra also believes in the transformative power of humor and how healing laughter can be. She often uses lightheartedness in her sessions to help clients ease tension, gain perspective, and find moments of relief amidst life’s challenges. For Debra, laughter is not just a way to lighten the burden—it’s a form of medicine that fosters connection, resilience, and emotional healing. She understands that even in the most difficult times, a shared smile or laugh can create space for hope and renewal.
In both her personal and professional life, Debra is deeply influenced by the teachings of Eckhart Tolle, particularly the concept that “Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.” She believes that understanding how negative thoughts contribute to suffering is essential for reducing emotional distress and finding peace, even in the face of life’s inevitable challenges. This philosophy informs her work as she helps clients navigate emotional and physical pain while striving to reduce suffering.
As a certified clinical supervisor and certified school social worker, Debra also dedicates her time to mentoring and supporting other professionals in the field. Her compassionate, integrative approach empowers clients to heal, grow, and create meaningful change in their lives.
