Our Story
Maplewood Counseling was founded in 2000 with a simple belief: therapy works best when it feels human first. Over two decades, the practice has grown from a single therapist to a team of six licensed clinicians — and that founding belief still drives everything we do.
We’re not a corporate practice. We’re not an insurance panel mill. We’re a small, deliberate group of clinicians who chose this practice for the quality of work it allows us to do — longer sessions, fewer admin demands, real attention to each client.
What We Believe
- Therapy is a relationship. Fit matters more than method.
- Real change takes real time. We’re not selling six-session miracles.
- Identity belongs in the room. Culture, sexuality, race, faith, and history are part of the work.
- Confidentiality is sacred. What’s said here, stays here.
- You’re the expert on your own life. We’re here to help you hear yourself more clearly.
How We Work
There’s no single “Maplewood method.” Each clinician brings their own training and lens — EFT, Gottman, IFS, attachment-based, trauma-informed, mindfulness-based, and more. What we share is a commitment to:
Real conversation, not therapy theater
You won’t hear “mm-hmm” for 50 minutes. You’ll get someone who engages, asks honest questions, and tells you what they’re seeing — with care, but without dancing around the truth.
Sessions designed for depth, not throughput
We work out-of-network so we can do the work without insurance company restrictions on session length, frequency, or approach.
A team that knows when to refer
If your situation needs a specialty we don’t offer (medication management, intensive trauma work, specific addiction services), we’ll say so and help you find the right resource.
Our Team of Licensed NJ Clinicians
Every couple, individual, and family deserves a therapist who fits. Our team brings different specialties, styles, and life experiences — so when you reach out, we match you with the right person.

Why Couples and Individuals Choose Maplewood Counseling
Specialized, not generalist
Our clinicians have deep specialty training — couples work, trauma-informed care, LGBTQ+ affirming therapy, complex family dynamics. We’re not generalists adding services on the side.
Often same-week availability
When you’re ready to start, waiting weeks for a first session can be the difference between getting help and giving up. We work hard to offer same-week appointments when possible.
In-person & telehealth
Our Maplewood office serves Essex County in person. Telehealth is available across all of New Jersey — same clinicians, same depth, just on screen.
Out-of-network, with full superbill support
Many insurance plans reimburse a portion of out-of-network mental health visits. We provide detailed superbills to make filing easy.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which therapist is right for me?
You don’t have to figure it out alone. Book a free 15-minute phone consultation, and we’ll talk through what you’re looking for and match you with the clinician on our team who fits best. If we’re not the right practice for your situation, we’ll tell you that too — and help point you in the right direction.
What does an initial session look like?
The first session is mostly listening. Your therapist will ask about what brought you in, what you’ve tried before, and what you’re hoping might be different. No assignments, no rapid diagnoses — just a thoughtful conversation about where you are and where you might want to go.
Do you accept insurance?
We are an out-of-network provider. Many insurance plans offer out-of-network mental health benefits that reimburse a portion of each session. We provide a detailed superbill you can submit for reimbursement.
Do you offer telehealth?
Yes. All our clinicians offer telehealth sessions for clients across New Jersey. In-person sessions are available at our Maplewood office at 169 Maplewood Ave #4.
How long does therapy take?
It depends on what you’re working on. Some clients come for focused, short-term work (8–12 sessions). Others stay for ongoing support over months or years. We’ll talk about pace and pacing as we go.
What ages do you work with?
Our practice works with adolescents (16+), adults, and couples of all ages. We do not currently provide therapy for young children.
Are you LGBTQ+ affirming?
Yes. All our clinicians are LGBTQ+ affirming. We work with gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, non-binary, and polyamorous clients with the same care and depth as any other client.
Are you a religious or secular practice?
We’re a secular practice with deep respect for clients’ faith traditions. If your spirituality is part of your therapy, we welcome it in the room. If it’s not, that’s welcome too.
