Frequently Asked Questions

Understanding how therapy works is the first step toward feeling comfortable in your journey. Here are answers to some common questions we receive from individuals, couples, and families.

General & Services

What can I expect during my first session?
Your first session is a time for us to get to know each other. It’s a low-pressure conversation where we discuss what brings you to therapy, your history, and your goals. Most importantly, it’s a safe space for you to see if your therapist feels like the right fit for you. There is no pressure to “dive deep” immediately; we move at a pace that feels safe for you.

Do you offer therapy for specific relationship types?
Yes. We welcome all relationship structures. whether you are married, dating, co-parenting, or navigating a non-traditional partnership, our counselors are trained to support your unique dynamic without judgment.

How do I know if I need individual or couples counseling?
Sometimes it’s hard to tell. If your primary stress comes from relationship conflict, communication breakdowns, or distance from your partner, couples counseling is often the best starting point. If you are struggling with personal anxiety, past trauma, or self-esteem issues that affect your daily life, individual therapy might be the right first step. We can help you decide during your initial consultation.

The Hybrid Model (In-Person & Online)

Is online therapy as effective as in-person sessions?
Absolutely. Research shows that telehealth is just as effective as face-to-face therapy for many concerns. Our secure video platform allows you to connect from the comfort of your home, which many clients find more convenient and less stressful. However, if you prefer a dedicated physical space outside your home, our Maplewood office is open to you.

Can I switch between online and in-person appointments?
Yes. We understand that life changes week to week. We offer a flexible hybrid model that allows you to choose the format that works best for your schedule and comfort level, provided you are located in New Jersey at the time of your session.

Trauma-Informed & Inclusive Care

What does “trauma-informed” actually mean?
Being trauma-informed means we recognize how past experiences—whether from childhood, relationships, or acute events—impact your current emotional health. We prioritize your physical and emotional safety above all else. We won’t push you to discuss painful memories before you are ready, and we focus on building resilience and stability first.

Is your practice safe for LGBTQ+ individuals and couples?
Yes, unequivocally. We are proud to be an LGBTQ+ affirming practice. We don’t just “accept” diversity; we celebrate it. Our therapists are trained to address the specific challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, including gender identity exploration, coming out, and navigating societal bias, all within a space of total respect and validation.

Do you take my cultural background into account?
Your culture, faith, and heritage are essential parts of who you are. We practice cultural humility, which means we honor your lived experience and worldview. We never assume one approach fits all; instead, we invite you to bring your full self into the room so we can tailor our support to your values.
