Online Therapy in New Jersey — Statewide Telehealth Counseling
Online therapy serving New Jersey statewide
Open 7 days a week — Saturday 9 AM–3 PM, Sunday 9 AM–3 PM, weekday evenings until 8–9 PM. Therapy that fits your real schedule.
You Don’t Have to Choose Between Real Therapy and Real Life
You want therapy that actually moves things forward — but the commute, the waiting room, the calendar Tetris, the privacy of being seen walking into a therapist’s office, none of it fits the life you’re actually living. So you’ve put it off. Maybe for a long time.
Online therapy at Maplewood Counseling is built for the version of your life that’s real — wherever in New Jersey you are, whatever your schedule looks like, whatever you’re working on. Same expert care our in-person clients get, delivered over secure video, on your time.
We’re a premium specialty practice for couples and online therapy — out-of-network by design. We keep our caseloads small enough to do focused, sustained work. The kind that insurance-driven volume practices can’t offer.
How We Approach Online Therapy
The online therapy space is crowded with apps that match you with a random “coach,” text-only “support,” or rotating clinicians who barely know your name. That’s not what we do.
Real video sessions with a clinician you choose
You see the same NJ-licensed therapist each session. You pick who’s the right match — their photo, credentials, specialty, and approach are all visible before you book. No random matching. No rotating providers. Sessions are 45–50 minutes (or 60, 90, 120 — see formats below), full video, the same depth as in-person therapy.
Multiple session formats, not just the insurance default
Insurance authorizes 45-minute slots. Sometimes that’s right. Sometimes you need 60 minutes for couples work. Sometimes a 90-minute or 2-hour intensive accelerates breakthrough work that would otherwise take months. We offer all of them. We’ll talk about what fits your work in your fit call.
A simple, secure tech setup
We use SimplePractice’s HIPAA-compliant secure video platform. No app to download — just a browser. You’ll get a one-click link before each session. If you can Zoom or FaceTime, you can do telehealth with us. Tech orientation in your first session takes 60 seconds. If your internet drops mid-session, we reconnect via phone immediately.
Statewide reach across all 21 NJ counties
Our clinicians are licensed in New Jersey, which means we can see any NJ resident regardless of which county you live in: Atlantic · Bergen · Burlington · Camden · Cape May · Cumberland · Essex · Gloucester · Hudson · Hunterdon · Mercer · Middlesex · Monmouth · Morris · Ocean · Passaic · Salem · Somerset · Sussex · Union · Warren.
Specialty-matched, not generic
What we treat online includes the full range of clinical work we do in-person: couples therapy and relationship work (communication, trust repair, infidelity recovery, premarital, blended families, LGBTQ+ couples), individual therapy for anxiety / depression / life transitions / identity / grief, family therapy, caregiver burnout and aging parent stress, identity-affirming care for LGBTQ+ and BIPOC clients. If you’re not sure whether your work fits telehealth, the 15-minute fit call is the answer. We’ll tell you honestly.
Our Team of Licensed NJ Clinicians
You’re not going to be matched with a random “online therapist.” Our six licensed clinicians have real specialties, real bios, and real availability — you see all of it before you book. Every clinician on the Maplewood team is licensed in New Jersey and trained in evidence-based approaches. We work with adults, couples, and families across the full range of life challenges that bring people to therapy.
Insurance & Fees
We’re a private-pay, out-of-network specialty practice. That’s a deliberate choice — being out-of-network means we focus on the specific clinical work that matters for you, not the modalities or session lengths an insurance company will authorize. We keep our caseloads small enough to do focused, sustained work.
Session rates
Standard 45 and 60-minute session rates range from $150 to $240, depending on the clinician and session length. 90-minute and 2-hour intensives are priced separately and shared during your fit call. Your specific rate is confirmed up front — no surprises before you book.
Out-of-network insurance reimbursement
If your insurance plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits (most PPO plans do — HMO plans usually don’t), you can get a portion of each session reimbursed:
- You pay us directly at the time of each session
- We provide a detailed superbill after each session (with all the CPT codes and diagnosis information your insurer needs)
- You submit the superbill to your insurance
- Your insurance reimburses you directly — typically 50–80% of the session cost, depending on your specific out-of-network benefits and deductible status
Call your plan and ask: “What are my out-of-network mental health benefits for CPT codes 90791 and 90837?”
HSA, FSA, and HRA — fully accepted
Therapy is a qualified medical expense under all three plans. Pay with your HSA, FSA, or HRA card and the cost comes out pre-tax — effectively a 22–32% discount depending on your tax bracket. The most underused cost-saver in OON therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?
For most clinical work, yes. Multiple peer-reviewed studies — including meta-analyses published since 2020 — have found telehealth therapy outcomes equivalent to in-person therapy for conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and relationship issues. For some clients, telehealth actually improves outcomes because they’re more comfortable in their own environment.
Does my insurance cover online therapy at Maplewood?
We’re a private-pay, out-of-network practice — we don’t bill insurance directly. However, if your insurance plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits (most PPO plans do), you can get a portion of each session reimbursed. We provide a detailed superbill after each session that you submit to your insurance. Typical reimbursement is 50–80% of the session cost. You can also pay with HSA, FSA, or HRA funds — pre-tax dollars effectively make therapy 22–32% cheaper.
What if I don’t connect with my therapist?
Tell us. We’ll match you with someone else from our team. The clinical relationship is the most important predictor of therapeutic outcomes — fit matters, and there’s no awkwardness around switching.
How soon can I be seen?
Most new clients are scheduled within one week of their fit call, often sooner. Evening and weekend appointments are available depending on the clinician you’re matched with.
Can we do couples therapy online?
Yes. Couples therapy via telehealth works particularly well when both partners are in the same physical space, but we can also accommodate sessions where partners are in separate locations (helpful during high-conflict periods, or when partners travel for work). Is the video platform HIPAA-compliant?
Yes. We use SimplePractice, a HIPAA-compliant encrypted video platform built specifically for healthcare providers. Sessions are not recorded. Your privacy is protected at the same standard as our in-person sessions.
Do you offer online therapy only, or also in-person?
Both. Maplewood Counseling has a physical office in Maplewood, NJ. Many of our clients do a mix — some sessions in office, some via telehealth — depending on what fits their week. You can switch back and forth without changing therapists.
What’s the difference between Maplewood telehealth and apps like BetterHelp?
We’re a small, NJ-based specialty practice with six licensed clinicians who do specific therapeutic work. You see the same therapist each session and build a real relationship over time. Sessions are 45–50 minute video calls, not text or app messages. We’re an out-of-network specialty practice — we provide superbills for insurance reimbursement and accept HSA/FSA. App-based services typically offer text/audio support with rotating providers. Both have their place — we’re built for clients who want real, sustained therapy with a clinician they know.
Ready to Start?
The first step is a 15-minute fit call. A short video or phone conversation with our intake coordinator — we’ll talk about what brings you in, what you’re working on, and which clinician on our team would be the right match for your specific work.
Or call us directly: (973) 902-8700
We answer during business hours. If we miss your call, we call back the same day.
