What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session | Maplewood Counseling

Your First Session: A Space to Be Heard

Taking the first step into counseling can be a big decision, and it’s completely natural to have some uncertainty. Whether you are coming on your own, with a partner, or as a family, your first session is simply a conversation—a welcoming, confidential space for you to share your experiences and start your path to healing. There is no pressure, no judgment—only support.

What to Expect on Your First Visit

Your initial session sets the stage for our work together. It’s an opportunity for individuals, couples, or families to connect with the therapist, build rapport, and begin to feel understood and supported.

  • A Warm Welcome: We aim to create a relaxed and comforting environment—whether you’re coming alone, with a partner, or as a family. Our purpose is to listen with genuine empathy so each person or group feels seen and valued right from the start.
  • Sharing Your Story: This is your space to talk about what brought you, your relationship, or your family to counseling. Share at your own pace, and we’ll gently guide the conversation to understand your challenges, your journey, and your hopes for the future—together or as individuals.
  • Setting a Foundation: Together, we’ll begin outlining what you would like to accomplish in therapy. This session is about collaboration—building a plan that fits your unique needs and circumstances, whether you are seeking personal healing, relationship support, or growth as a family.

We recognize that opening up takes courage. Your willingness to begin this journey—on your own, as a couple, or with your family—reflects real strength. We are here to honor that by providing a caring, nonjudgmental environment.

Ready to begin? Let us offer the safe and welcoming space you need to connect and grow—individually, together, or as a family.

Frequently Asked Questions About Your First Session

How do I prepare for my first session?
There’s nothing special you need to do before arriving. Just bring yourself, your partner, or your family. If it’s helpful, you may jot down any thoughts or questions you’d like to explore together. Feeling nervous is normal—your therapist will support and guide each of you.

What should I bring to my first session?
Your session intake is sent up ahead of time so you don’t need to bring anything since we will have the information we need in your file.

What happens during the first session?
Your therapist will greet you with warmth and clearly outline what to expect. You’ll discuss your reasons for coming to counseling—whether that relates to individual concerns, relationship goals, or family challenges—and your hopes for therapy. Everyone is welcome to ask questions and help shape how the process unfolds.

Will we be asked difficult questions right away?
Your comfort is always our focus. While the therapist may ask about your history or current challenges (either personal, relational, or family-related), you decide what to share and when. There is never pressure to discuss anything before you’re ready.

What should I expect after the first session?
Many people feel some relief and hope after their first session, whether they came alone, with a partner, or as a family. It’s common to reflect on what was shared, and occasionally feel a bit tired. Your therapist will help discuss next steps, and you’ll have the opportunity to schedule follow-up sessions if you wish.

What if I’m not sure this is the right fit?
A strong connection with your therapist is vital for meaningful progress—no matter who attends sessions. If you have concerns, please say so. Our goal is to support your journey fully, including helping you find the best therapeutic match for your situation.

If you still have questions, please reach out. We’re here to listen and support you—wherever you are in your journey, and whoever is walking alongside you.
