How Couples Therapy Works: Your Path to Connection

How Couples Therapy Works: Your Path to Connection

Starting couples therapy is a brave step toward building a stronger, happier relationship. You might have questions about how the process works or what you can expect. At Maplewood Counseling, our goal is to make your experience as simple, comfortable, and clear as possible. In this guide, we’ll explain our process, show you the flexible options we offer, and cover the common challenges we help couples face.

Flexible Therapy Options to Fit Your Life

We know every couple has unique needs and different schedules. That is why we offer both in-person and online therapy sessions, giving you the choice that fits your life best.

Session Length Options

To support your goals and work with your time, we offer several session lengths. You can choose the option that matches your needs and comfort level.

45-Minute Sessions

These shorter sessions are great for couples who want focused support and have tight schedules. Even with limited time, you can make meaningful progress.

60-Minute Sessions

A 60-minute session allows for a balanced pace. This is our standard length and fits most couples who want time to talk and still maintain a steady routine.

90-Minute intensive sessions can be arranged if you’re looking to jumpstart your progress or work through more complex issues. These sessions give extra space for deep conversations and effective planning.

Therapy Formats

You can choose how and where you’d like to meet for therapy—whatever makes you feel most at ease.

In-Person Sessions: A Traditional Approach

Many people like to meet in-person. These sessions give you a private and welcoming space, away from daily routines. Because you are face-to-face in our office, it is often easier to focus on healthy communication and deep, meaningful work.

Online Sessions: Therapy from the Comfort of Home

Some couples find online sessions work better for their busy lives. You get the same expert care and can join from anywhere you feel safe and comfortable. All you need is a private spot and an internet connection to start making real progress together.

Common Issues We Address Together

Every relationship faces challenges. Still, you don’t have to face them alone. Our experienced therapists create a safe and judgement-free place where you and your partner can talk openly and work on the issues that are keeping you apart. We often help couples with:

Communication and Trust

Communication Problems

Do arguments keep repeating? We guide you to break old patterns and speak with more kindness and understanding.

Trust and Infidelity

Betrayal can hurt deeply. We offer caring support and steps to rebuild trust and move forward with honesty.

Conflict Resolution

Disagreements will happen, but they don’t have to cause lasting harm. We teach you how to handle conflict, lower tension, and work as a team.

Intimacy and Connection

If you feel distant, we help you find closeness again, both emotionally and physically.

Parenting and Family

Parenting Challenges

Raising children is hard, and parenting differences can cause stress. We help you come together to support your family.

Financial Stress

Money is a big topic. We provide a neutral place to build understanding around financial fears and goals.

Life Changes

Life Transitions

Changes like getting married, having a child, job changes, or an empty nest can bring extra challenges. We help you adapt, so you stay strong as a team.

Whatever your struggle, our purpose is to give you practical help and ongoing support. We aim to help you understand each other, face challenges, and build a connection that lasts.

Are you ready to take the next step? We are here and ready to help you find the right path forward.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How many sessions will we need?
The number of sessions varies depending on your goals and the complexity of the issues you’re addressing. Some couples find significant progress in 6-20 sessions, while others may benefit from ongoing support over a longer period.

Can we switch between in-person and online sessions?
Yes, we offer flexibility to accommodate your needs. You can discuss with your therapist to determine the best format for your situation.

What if my partner is hesitant to attend therapy?
This is a common concern. We encourage open communication about the benefits of therapy and can provide resources to help your partner feel more comfortable. In some cases, starting with individual sessions can be a helpful first step.

What if we’ve already decided to separate?
Even if separation is on the table, therapy can help you navigate the process with respect and clarity. We can assist with co-parenting strategies and help you part ways amicably.

Payment and Insurance Information

At Maplewood Counseling, we strive to make the payment process as seamless as possible. We accept personal credit cards, Health Savings Account (HSA) cards, and Flex Spending Account (FSA) cards for payment.

For those with out-of-network insurance benefits, our system automatically generates an invoice called a “superbill.” This superbill can be submitted to your insurance provider for potential reimbursement. While we do not bill insurance directly, we are happy to guide you through the process of using your superbill to maximize your benefits.

If you have any question or would like to start therapy, get in touch with us through our website or give us a call. We are here to support you and your relationship every step of the way.
