Discernment Counseling in NJ: Clarity When You’re Not Sure Whether to Stay or Go

Not sure whether to stay or go? You don’t have to decide alone. Discernment counseling is a short, structured process that helps you and your partner gain clarity and confidence about the future of your relationship, without pressure to fix it or end it.

If you’re reading this, something may already feel unsettled. Maybe you’ve thought about divorce and pulled back. Maybe one of you has said the words out loud. Maybe you’re both exhausted and unsure whether anything is worth another try. That in-between place is hard to live in, and it’s exactly where discernment counseling begins.

At Maplewood Counseling, discernment counseling is not open-ended couples therapy, and it is not an effort to talk you into staying together or splitting up. It’s a focused look at where you are, how you got here, and which direction you want to go, so the next decision is one you can stand behind. If you’d rather start with traditional work on the relationship, see our couples therapy in NJ.

Is this you?

Discernment counseling was designed for one situation in particular: one partner is “leaning out” and the other is “leaning in.” Most people don’t know this has a name. It’s more common than you’d think.

The partner leaning out

You’re seriously considering ending the relationship, or you’re so unsure that you can’t commit to working on it. You may feel guilty, stuck, or worried about hurting someone you still care about.

The partner leaning in

You want to save the relationship, and the uncertainty is painful. You may be afraid that pushing will drive your partner further away, and afraid that waiting means losing them.

Both of you unsure

You’re not far apart on the question, but neither of you knows the answer. You want a clear, calm way to think it through before anything irreversible happens.

Three paths, with your eyes open

Discernment counseling helps you choose between three directions, without a verdict or pressure from us:

1. Keep things as they are

Stay in the relationship without changing course, with a clearer understanding of what that means for each of you.

2. Move toward separation or divorce

Choose to end the relationship thoughtfully, with a plan that treats each other, and any children, with care.

3. Commit to a defined period of couples therapy

Decide to rebuild, with a set time frame and a shared goal, so you can truly try rather than half-try.

What discernment counseling is, and what it isn’t

  • It is short and structured, usually one to five sessions.
  • It is a mix of conversations with the two of you together and with each of you individually.
  • It is non-judgmental. Your therapist doesn’t take sides.
  • It isn’t open-ended couples therapy, and it doesn’t ask you to work on the relationship while the bigger question is still open.
  • It isn’t a push to reconcile, or a push to separate.

What to expect

Getting started

You begin with a 15-Minute Intro Call with our Client Care Team, who match you to a therapist. In the first session, you each share where you are and what you hope for.

The middle sessions

Your therapist meets with each of you privately and with both of you together, exploring what has happened, what each of you contributed, and what you want next.

Reaching a decision point

By the end, you choose one of the three paths. If you choose to rebuild, we can move into couples therapy. If you choose to part, we help you do it with care.

Discernment counseling questions people ask most

How is discernment counseling different from couples therapy?

Couples therapy works on improving the relationship. Discernment counseling helps you decide whether to work on it at all. It’s brief, usually one to five sessions, and focused on clarity about the future, not on fixing problems while the bigger question is still open.

How many sessions does discernment counseling take?

Most couples meet for one to five sessions. The process is built to be short and structured, with a clear decision point at the end, so it doesn’t turn into open-ended therapy.

What if only one of us is unsure?

That’s the situation discernment counseling was designed for. One partner is often leaning out while the other leans in. Your therapist meets with each of you privately as well as together, so both perspectives are heard without anyone feeling pushed.

Can we do discernment counseling online?

Yes. We offer discernment counseling by secure video for couples across New Jersey, as well as in person at our Maplewood office.
